We worked with a homeowner in Lerwick to upgrade their existing solar panel system, adding battery storage and modernising the property’s electrical setup.

Project Overview

This client already had an existing Feed-in Tariff (FIT) registered solar PV system that had generated renewable electricity for many years. George Robertson was appointed to modernise the installation by replacing the original inverter with a Sigenergy hybrid inverter, installing battery storage and ensuring the customer retained their valuable Feed-in Tariff payments.

The Challenge

Upgrading an older FIT-accredited solar installation requires careful planning. Any changes to the inverter or metering arrangements must comply with the FIT scheme. We prepared the technical design, liaised with the FIT provider and ensured the proposed alterations were fully compliant before work commenced.

Our Solution

  • Replaced the existing inverter with a Sigenergy EC 3.68kW Hybrid Inverter.
  • Installed a 9.04kWh Sigenergy DC-coupled battery.
  • Installed a Sigenergy Gateway Home Pro for whole-house backup.
  • Installed new generation metering.
  • Configured export limitation to 3.68kW.
  • Fully tested and commissioned the installation.

The Result

The customer now benefits from storing excess solar generation for use during the evening, reducing imported electricity while maintaining their FIT income. The new system also provides whole-house backup capability and intelligent energy management through the Sigenergy platform.

Customer Benefits

  • Existing FIT payments protected.
  • Greater self-consumption.
  • Lower electricity bills.
  • Whole-house backup power.
  • Smart monitoring via the Sigenergy app.
  • Future-ready energy system.

The finished system is fully integrated, with solar, battery, grid, and backup all working together as one.

The system generates around 4,192 kWh of solar energy each year, with estimated lifetime savings of over £38,000 and a payback period of around 8 years.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates our ability to successfully upgrade legacy FIT solar installations using the latest hybrid battery technology while carefully managing regulatory compliance and delivering long-term value for our customers.
