We worked with a homeowner in Lerwick to upgrade their existing solar panel system, adding battery storage and modernising the property’s electrical setup.
Project Overview
The aim was to make better use of the energy already being generated, reduce reliance on the grid, and future-proof the home - without affecting their existing Feed-in Tariff (FIT) payments.
The property already had a 4 kWp solar PV system in place, but there was no way to store excess energy, and the electrical system was not suitable for modern upgrades. A key part of the project was ensuring that any changes remained fully compliant with FIT regulations.
The Solution
We designed and installed a system that works seamlessly with the existing solar setup while giving the homeowner far greater control over their energy use.
This included:
- A Sigenergy hybrid inverter
- A 9.04kWh battery to store excess solar energy
- A backup system to keep the home powered during outages
Alongside this, we carried out a full upgrade of the mains electrical system, installing a new consumer unit with modern safety protection and improving the property’s earthing.
To protect the homeowner’s FIT income, we also installed a specialist meter and configured the system so only genuine solar generation is recorded - ensuring full compliance.
The Result
The finished system is fully integrated, with solar, battery, grid, and backup all working together as one.
The homeowner now benefits from:
- Lower electricity bills, saving over £1,000 per year
- Reduced reliance on the grid (around 28% less)
- Continued FIT income with no disruption
- Backup power during outages
- A safer, modern electrical installation
The system generates around 4,192 kWh of solar energy each year, with estimated lifetime savings of over £38,000 and a payback period of around 8 years.
This project shows how an existing solar system can be upgraded into a smarter, more efficient energy solution - without losing the benefits already in place.
Every home is different - and so is every solar solution. Whether you’re looking to reduce your energy bills, add backup protection, or make your home more sustainable, we can design a system tailored to your needs and your Shetland home or business.
