With limited roof space but plenty of land, this homeowner chose a ground-mounted system to maximise solar generation. The result is a setup that keeps the household running on clean energy for most of the year — even through the winter.

Project Overview

George Robertson recently completed the installation of a high-performance ground mounted solar PV and battery storage system at Bixter. Designed to maximise renewable energy generation while providing significant battery capacity, the system enables the homeowner to reduce reliance on imported electricity and make the most of Shetland’s long summer daylight.

The Challenge

The property had ample land available, making a ground mounted array the ideal solution. The customer wanted a future-proof renewable energy system capable of supplying a large proportion of the home's electricity demand while storing excess generation for use overnight and during periods of poor weather.

Our Solution

We designed and installed a 7.14 kWp ground mounted solar PV array comprising 14 AIKO 510 W high-efficiency solar panels, paired with a Sigenergy energy management system. An 8 kW Sigenergy Energy Controller was installed together with three 10 kWh Sigenergy battery modules, providing approximately 27.1 kWh of usable battery storage. The installation also included a Sigenergy smart meter, AC and DC isolation, monitoring and commissioning to full MCS standards.

Installation Equipment

  • 14 × AIKO 510 W N-Type solar panels (7.14 kWp total)
  • 1 × Sigenergy SigenStor EC 8.0 SP Energy Controller
  • 3 × Sigenergy 10 kWh battery modules (27.12 kWh total storage)
  • Sigenergy Smart Meter
  • DC isolators, AC isolator and protection equipment
  • Full commissioning, testing and MCS certification

The Result

The completed installation provides an estimated annual solar generation of approximately 5,255 kWh and is expected to offset around 44% of the household's annual electricity consumption. The large battery system captures excess daytime generation for use during the evening and overnight, significantly reducing imported electricity and providing greater energy independence. The Sigenergy platform also gives the homeowner real-time monitoring and intelligent energy management through the mobile app.
