If you own a home in Scotland, it’s your responsibility to make sure your fire alarms meet the current legal standard. Since 1 February 2022, the law changed so that most homes must have interlinked smoke and heat alarms - meaning if one alarm activates, they all sound together, helping alert you quickly wherever you are in the house.

What alarms are required?

In plain terms, the minimum standard for most homes is:

  • One smoke alarm in the living room (or the room you use most)
  • One smoke alarm in every hallway and landing
  • One heat alarm in the kitchen
  • All of these must be ceiling-mounted and interlinked (wired or wireless)

In many homes, you’ll also need a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm in any room with a carbon-fuelled appliance (like a boiler, stove, fire) or a flue.

Do the rules apply to every type of home?

The rules apply broadly across Scotland - owner-occupied, rented, and social housing - with the “tolerable standard” being the key benchmark for what a home must have.

Why interlinked alarms matter?

Interlinked alarms improve safety because you don’t have to be near the room where a fire starts to hear the warning - when one triggers, they all do.
